Policies Governing the Year III Elective Block
Students are strongly encouraged to complete the Year III Elective Block at their home institution (defined as the campus in which you are taking your clerkships). Away rotations to institutions other than the College of Medicine or between Phoenix and Tucson are problematic due to scheduling, security clearance, and institutional application procedures. Delays in approval of away rotations will hinder your ability to obtain another elective of your choice at your home site.
Any exceptions to the following policies must receive prior approval in writing by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs (Phoenix) or the Associate Dean for Student Affairs (Tucson).
- In the Year III Elective Block, students:
- Must complete 4 elective units; this time may not be used for vacation or other time off.
- May enroll in one, 4-week elective course or two, 2-week elective courses.
- May apply for enrollment in elective courses offered at either the Tucson or Phoenix campus.
- May apply for enrollment in “away” electives at institutions other than the College of Medicine, independent study electives, and research electives only with the approval of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs/Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.
- May enroll in “away” electives for only 4 weeks; 2-week “away” electives will not be approved.
- May enroll in elective course(s) during Year III only in the designated Year III Elective Block.
- May not change their Year III Elective Block schedule once it is finalized with the courses/departments.
- Completion of the Year III Elective Block may not be delayed to Year IV.
- Students from schools other than the College of Medicine may not enroll in Year III elective courses.
